We offer for your consideration this antique scale.
This scale was manufactured by the William & Thomas Avery Company Ltd. in 1908, and bears the crown over “E.R.” stamp.
The stamp of king Edward or Edward Rex. The company stamp on the dampening paddle indicates it was produced at the
Mill Lane Works in Birmingham. This scale saw service for the city of Birmingham.
W&T Avery produced scales for many municipalities in England at the time.
Established in 1818, they were in the business of making weighing machines well up until 1979.
This scale is a 7 pound capacity scale. The base measures 12 1/2 inches deep by 25 inches wide, and rest on three wood footpads. The tower is approximately 26 inches tall, the crossarm is approximately 17 inches wide. The trays are approximately 6 7/8ths in diameter. The right tray bears the stamps that most likely were used by government metrology inspectors after ch
ecking the accuracy of the scale. The stamps date from 1914, the latest stamp dated 1960.
We do not know what the City of Birmingham used the scale for, but judging by the use of the government inspection stamps, it’s use was an official one.
If you are a collector of antique English weighing machines this one will be a fine addition to your collection.
