Description
This listing is for an antique all-natural peasant shirt from eastern Europe. I’m not certain if the fiber is flax or hemp, but it feels soft and is entirely homespun and hand sewn. These types of shirts were worn as everyday clothing by peasants when working in fields and around the homestead. As such, these saw a lot of use and were frequently turned into rags once they were no longer wearable. This one has actually survived in surprisingly good shape, all things considered. Apart from some staining and a small hole, there are no serious concerns. I suspect the stains would even come out with additional soaking as the fabric is in excellent, durable condition and will survive many more decades of use. Such shirt were at one time worn all over Europe and are today popular with historical reenactors who need authentic historical clothing to represent the garb of the era. A great piece for anyone interested in historical clothing, ethnic dress, folklore, and traditions.
A note regarding condition: All of the costumes and textiles that I sell are vintage and have typically seen decades of use resulting in expected wear and tear that add to the history and authenticity of each piece. In case of above average wear, I try to list any significant damages and heavy signs of use in the above description. Depending on the age, materials, and condition, I will often hand-wash more durable, colorfast cotton and linen elements, but embellished garments, heavier wool pieces or items made from silk or fine fabrics are sold in the original, unwashed condition. Small holes or stains, missing sequins/beads, worn trim, and other marks related to standard wear are common and do not detract from the value of most pieces. Please keep in mind that a vintage textile or garment in very good condition might still show signs of use, storage and age. Unless otherwise noted, all of the items listed for sale are in very good, stable condition and are suitable for use, wear or display.
